Season 7, Post 37: Party on
Your author, even now in his late 40s, still enjoys going to the occasional music festival. The picture included in this piece was taken earlier this summer. This blog post, however, is not about hedonistic behaviour but rather about the wellness benefits attached to attending such events. These include improvements in both physical and mental health, and form part of the longevity future trend about which we wrote recently.
Our latest piece of thematic work (which, coincidentally, was released days prior to a detailed piece in the Financial Times on the same topic) argued that multiple approaches are being explored for how to lead a longer life. Arguably, most important is the need to improve healthspan. Some of this can be achieved through pre-emptive lifestyle choices.
Where does partying fit in? Longevity Rave was formed by a group of longevity scientists and entrepreneurs who “believe in the power of music, joy and connection for a healthy, happy life.” Several events have been held since its launch in 2024. Elsewhere, the concept of ‘soft clubbing’ is gaining traction. The common thread behind such events is that they are wellness-led and can help drive optimism, promote health and allow participants to feel younger.
The scientific support for these contentions remains insubstantial, but many foods and beverages that are depicted as offering health benefits are equally not backed by science. What is clear is that loneliness affects one in six people globally and has serious health consequences, equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to the World Health Organisation. At the same time, more than a third of people globally say they are seeking “more fun and laughter in their lives.” The backers of Longevity Rave are in the process of designing a scientific study to support their cause. Partying is not a panacea, but it may help improve both healthspan and lifespan.
